Chapter 7 - The Unbroken Shield

The heavy rain continued to hammer down onto the dark Chicago alleyway, but neither man nor boy moved. Andrew remained on one knee in the puddle, his hand trembling as he held the unfolded, water-stained photograph. The neon lights of the city reflected off the wet paper, casting an eerie, shifting glow across the unseen image that had just shattered Andrew’s reality.
"Who gave this to you?" Andrew demanded, his gravelly voice cracking with an unprecedented surge of raw emotion. "Ethan... who gave you this picture?!"
Ethan swallowed hard, his dark eyes fixed on Andrew. "My mother," the boy whispered through the cold wind. "Before the men in dark uniforms took her away three days ago. She told me to run to Michigan Avenue. She said if I found the man in the black coat with tattoos on his neck, I would be safe forever."
Andrew’s heart slammed against his ribs like a sledgehammer. He looked back down at the photograph, his thumb gently tracing the edge of the paper, keeping the image completely shielded from the alleyway and the audience.
The photograph didn't just show a face from his distant, violent past—a woman he had believed dead for nearly a decade—it showed her holding a newborn baby with a distinctive, tiny heart-shaped birthmark on its left wrist.
Slowly, Andrew reached out with his left hand. He took hold of Ethan’s small, soaked arm, gently sliding back the sleeve of the oversized denim jacket and hoodie.

There, on the wet skin of the eight-year-old's left wrist, was the exact same heart-shaped birthmark.
Andrew let out a long, shuddering breath. The boy standing before him wasn't just a stranger running from danger; Ethan was his son.
