Chapter 12 - THE DIVORCE WAS QUIETER THAN THE BETRAYAL

Rebecca moved out before Thanksgiving.

Not because Elias threw her belongings onto the lawn.

Because they sat at the dining table one Sunday morning while Josephine stayed with Molly and admitted there was no honest marriage left to preserve.

Rebecca said:

“I still love you.”

Elias looked at her.

“I believe you.”

That hurt her more than disbelief.

Love had not prevented any of it.

She whispered:

“Is there any version where we fix this?”

Elias thought carefully.

“The affair? Maybe, once.”

Rebecca’s eyes filled.

“The fraud?”

“Maybe, if you’d come to me.”

She already knew the third answer.

“Our daughter?”

Elias’s voice broke for the first time.

“You made her afraid that telling her father the truth would destroy him.”

Rebecca covered her face.

“I know.”

“No marriage counseling fixes that before she gets to heal.”

Rebecca nodded.

They filed.

No screaming courtroom scene.

No revenge affair.

No secret fortune.

Just paperwork.

Custody was not relevant; Josephine was their shared biological daughter, but at fifteen her preferences mattered greatly in scheduling.

Josephine initially refused overnight time with Rebecca.

Elias did not force her.

He also did not poison her.

“You can be angry at Mom and still love her.”

Josephine asked:

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

That confused her.

Good.

Truth is often confusing before it becomes useful.
