Chapter 8 - The Shadow of the Past

While the underworld stabilized, Sarah and Emma remained at the Moretti estate for their safety.

Over the next two weeks, the cold, quiet halls of my mansion transformed into something I had never experienced in my thirty years of life.

The sound of Emma’s laughter echoed through the grand gallery as she played with the golden retriever I had bought for her. Sarah worked alongside Maria in the kitchen, bringing warm meals and light into a home that had previously known only shadows, blood, and business ledgers.

One evening, I sat on the rear terrace, watching the snowfall over the garden, when Sarah walked out wearing a warm wool sweater, holding two mugs of steaming coffee.

She handed one to me, sitting on the stone bench beside me.

"You don't look like a mob boss when you look at her," Sarah said softly, watching Emma build a snowman with Marco in the courtyard below.

"I didn't choose this life, Sarah," I admitted, looking down at the dark liquid in my mug. "My father was killed when I was sixteen. I took over his organization to protect my family. Along the way, I became the very thing people feared."

Sarah reached out, gently placing her warm hand over my gloved fingers.

"Emma sees who you really are, Calder," Sarah said softly, her hazel eyes meeting mine with a tender, unshakeable warmth. "And so do I."

My chest tightened with a feeling I hadn't felt since I was a boy—a quiet, dangerous hope that perhaps a man with blood on his hands could still be saved by the love of those he protected.
