Chapter 10 - The Family We Choose

The sunrise over Bay Ridge was clear, golden, and peaceful.

By 8:00 a.m., the estate grounds had been completely restored by my cleanup crews. The mercenary team had been eliminated, and Dmitri Volkov had been permanently removed from power by his own panicked captains, who realized his reckless assault on my home meant total destruction for their organization.

The Russian threat was gone forever.

I stood on the stone steps of the front driveway as two black SUVs waited to escort Sarah and Emma to the airport for their flight to Vermont.

Sarah stood before me, holding a small leather travel bag, her eyes shimmering with emotion.

"You gave us our lives back, Calder," she said softly, stepping forward to wrap her arms around my neck, kissing my cheek gently. "We will never forget what you did for us."

I held her close for a moment, smelling the scent of lavender in her hair, before looking down at Emma, who was tugging at the edge of my coat.

I dropped to one knee on the gravel drive.

"Are you going to be okay, little one?" I asked, smiling softly.

Emma reached out, wrapping her tiny arms around my neck, burying her face into my shoulder. "I don't want to go to Vermont, Mr. Calder."

I pulled back slightly, looking into her hazel eyes. "Why not? It's safe there. You'll have a big house, a garden, and a new school."

"Because you're not there," Emma whispered, tears streaming down her cheeks. "I want to stay with you."

I looked up at Sarah.

Sarah was smiling through her tears, giving me a silent, undeniable nod of agreement.

I looked back down at Emma, reaching out to wipe away her tears, a deep, profound sense of peace settling over my soul for the very first time in my life.

"Well," I said, standing up and taking Sarah's hand in mine while holding Emma on my hip. "It just so happens that I've been thinking about opening a few shipping companies up in Vermont anyway."

Emma’s face lit up into a brilliant, beautiful smile. "Really?"

"Really," I promised, looking into Sarah's eyes as she leaned into my side.

I had spent twenty years building an empire of fear, blood, and shadows. But as I looked at the mother and child standing beside me under the golden morning light, I realized that the greatest empire I would ever rule was the one built on love, protection, and family.

Together, we walked back up the stone steps of Vale Estate, entering our home—not as a mob boss and his refugees, but as a family bound by a promise made over a four-dollar sandwich in the snow.
