Chapter 1 - THE TIE AND THE LAPTOP

The afternoon sun streamed through the expansive floor-to-ceiling glass paneling of the eighty-second floor luxury penthouse in downtown Chicago, illuminating pristine white marble floors that swept through the vast living area and framed a breathtaking panorama of Lake Michigan. The penthouse was a quiet, suffocating palace of dark walnut, sleek chrome, and cold glass—a sanctuary designed for total control and absolute solitude.

At thirty-nine years old, Alessandro Duca commanded Chicago’s underworld with cold, surgical precision. He was tall, broad-shouldered, with dark hair combed neatly back, wearing an impeccably tailored black Italian suit over an open-collar white dress shirt. He sat behind his sleek black marble executive desk inside the glass-walled home office, his dark eyes locked onto a laptop displaying an active video conference. On the screen, three senior syndicate bosses and legal advisors discussed a critical multi-million-dollar real estate transfer.

"The waterfront properties are secured, Duca," a voice rasped from the laptop speakers. "We just need your signature on the final deed before five o'clock."

Alessandro didn't answer immediately. His sharp eyes remained fixed on the monitor, his posture rigid and commanding. For three months, he had operated under the assumption that his private penthouse was an impenetrable fortress, occupied only by his trusted security detail and his quiet, unobtrusive twenty-eight-year-old housemaid, Elena.

Without warning, a tiny, warm pressure tugged against the silk fabric of his dark tie hanging down near his knee.

Alessandro froze mid-sentence. He slowly shifted his gaze downward away from the laptop screen.

Crouched on the cool white marble floor directly beside his leather armchair was a ten-month-old baby girl. Her name was Mia. She had light brown hair styled into tiny wisps, soft hazel eyes, and was wearing a bright little pink dress. She had quietly crawled through the open double doors of the office, entirely unfazed by the powerful crime boss, and was now clutching Alessandro’s expensive silk tie in her tiny fist, pulling it toward her wet lips with an innocent, wide-eyed smile.

Before Alessandro could process the sight, frantic footsteps squeaked sharply against the polished marble outside the doorway.

Elena, twenty-eight years old, rushed into the office carrying a plastic laundry basket filled with freshly folded white linens. Her brown hair was tied in a slightly messy bun, her pale yellow maid uniform with its crisp white collar and white apron rumpled from a long day of cleaning. Her face drained of all color as she saw her ten-month-old daughter sitting inches from the most dangerous man in Chicago.

"I’m so sorry!" Elena gasped, dropping the laundry basket onto the floor with a soft thud as she lunged forward.

Alessandro slowly looked down at the tiny baby girl clutching his tie, then raised his intense, unblinking dark eyes to lock onto Elena’s panicked face.

"Whose baby is this?" Alessandro asked, his voice a low, dangerous rumble that cut through the sound of the ongoing video conference behind him.
