Chapter 7 - Sabrina Tells the Truth

Sabrina asked to speak with her attorney before the hearing resumed. When she returned, she no longer touched her stomach like a crown. She held herself carefully, one hand on the bench, her face blotched from tears. Her attorney stood and stated that Ms. Wells wished to correct prior representations made to the court.
Thomas whispered, “Don’t.”
Sabrina did not look at him.
She admitted Thomas had known there was uncertainty around the baby’s paternity before filing the claim. She admitted he told her the court only needed to believe the baby might be his long enough to reopen estate negotiations. She admitted he had promised her a house, monthly support, and public legitimacy if she followed his timeline.
“Did Mr. Hart instruct you to refer to Evelyn Hart’s home as your future residence?” Caleb asked.
Sabrina looked down. “Yes.”
“Did he ask you to locate safe keys or estate documents inside the home?”

“Yes.”
“Did he tell you why?”
She hesitated. Then said, “He said Claire was too emotional to manage what Evelyn left behind.”
My hands tightened under the table. Not because I was surprised. Because I could hear my mother’s warning again: Don’t let him rewrite me.
Thomas’s attorney tried to stop the damage, but the damage had already learned to speak. Sabrina provided messages. Payment promises. Notes about the timeline. A reference to the private investigator Thomas hired to watch my movements after the funeral. Each piece did not explode. It clicked into place.
By the time she finished, the gallery was silent.
Judge Mercer looked at my father. “Mr. Hart, this court is referring matters of perjury, attempted fraud upon the estate, and possible concealment of material familial and financial facts for further investigation.”
Thomas finally turned toward me.
May you like
For the first time in my life, he did not look like my father.
He looked like a man who had lived inside my mother’s house and called himself owner because nobody had opened the right envelope yet.
