Chapter 4 - Not a Hart

Judge Mercer read the report in silence while the courtroom held its breath. Thomas kept trying to force confidence back onto his face, but it no longer fit. Sabrina stared at the judge’s hands like she could will the paper closed again. When the judge finally spoke, his voice was measured, but the room heard the weight underneath it.

“The prenatal paternity report submitted under seal excludes Mr. Thomas Hart as the biological father of Ms. Wells’s unborn child.”

A sound moved through the gallery. Not quite a gasp. Not quite a whisper. Something uglier, because everyone understood how publicly Thomas had built his claim around a baby that was not his.

Thomas turned on Sabrina. “What did you do?”

She looked as though the question had slapped her. “Thomas—”

“Don’t say my name.”

The judge’s eyes sharpened. “Mr. Hart, you will remain silent unless addressed.”

Sabrina’s hand hovered near her stomach again, but this time the gesture did not look triumphant. It looked defensive. I felt no satisfaction in her fear. The baby was innocent. Sabrina was pregnant and safe, and nothing in that courtroom needed to become cruel toward a child. But her lie had been aimed at my mother’s estate, and I would not apologize for letting truth stop it.

Caleb stood. “Your Honor, in light of the paternity exclusion, Ms. Wells has no biological claim through Mr. Hart to the estate. However, as the court noted, the report revealed a second matter requiring immediate attention.”

Thomas’s face changed again. He had expected humiliation. He had not expected danger.

Judge Mercer turned one page.

“The test comparison included supplemental kinship analysis requested under this court’s prior order,” he said. “That analysis raises questions regarding Mr. Hart’s sworn claims about family status and inheritance representation.”

The room went colder.

My father looked at me for the first time all morning without contempt.

He looked afraid.
