Chapter 1 - The Envelope

The judge tore open the sealed DNA envelope, and the sound of paper snapping in the courtroom made my father’s smile freeze. Thomas Hart had walked into probate court that morning like a man arriving for a victory brunch. Gray suit, polished shoes, expensive watch, and Sabrina Wells seated beside him in a dark dress with one hand resting on her pregnant stomach. He looked proud of her. Not loving. Proud, like she was evidence he intended to spend.
I sat three seats in front of him in a navy suit, hands folded on the table, while my attorney Caleb Mercer watched the judge instead of my father. Caleb had told me not to react when the envelope opened. Let the paper speak first, he said. People who lie for months usually reveal more in the silence after truth arrives than they do under questioning.

Judge Harold Mercer slid the first page free. His eyes moved across the report once. Then again. His expression changed so sharply that even Sabrina’s bracelets stopped moving. Her hand, which had been rubbing her stomach in slow circles all morning, dropped into her lap.
Thomas leaned forward, trying to sound amused. “Is there a problem, Your Honor?”
The judge did not answer him immediately. He looked at Sabrina. Then at Thomas. Then at me.
Caleb calmly placed another blurred legal folder on the table.
Thomas turned toward Sabrina, his voice low and sharp. “What did you do?”
Sabrina’s face drained of color.
I stood slowly, not because I knew everything in that envelope, but because my mother had warned me that the truth would not stop at the baby. Judge Mercer raised the report slightly.

“Ms. Hart,” he said, “there is a far more serious matter we need to put on record.”
That was when my father went pale.
