Chapter 5 - THE UNEXPECTED ORDER

Emily looked up from the baby and stared directly into the eyes of the lead paramedic.

"Stop warming him," Emily ordered flatly.

The lead paramedic blinked, completely taken aback by the absurdity of the statement.

"What?" he stammered, holding the mask down tighter. "He's in hypothermic shock! His peripheral extremities are ice cold! We need the thermal blankets and the ambient heat up to maintain core temp!"

"Stop warming him," Emily repeated, her voice rising in firmness, cutting through the room with unquestionable authority. "Turn off the radiators. Strip the heavy cashmere blanket off his torso. You are accelerating the airway edema with radiant heat."

The room went dead quiet, save for the screaming flatline tone of the cardiac monitor.

Michael Carter stood motionless, staring down at the young maid. His analytical mind, honed through years of surviving high-stakes tactical and criminal maneuvering, recognized something instantly: Emily was not guessing. She was operating from a level of advanced medical knowledge that no domestic housemaid could possibly possess.

"Emily," Michael said, his voice dropping into a tense, dangerous whisper. "Explain what you mean. Right now."

"His body isn't in standard anaphylaxis or respiratory distress," Emily said, turning her head slightly to look at Michael, her eyes cold and clear. "The foam at his lips isn't pulmonary edema—it's proteinaceous fluid from a severe localized vagal reaction triggered by trapped pressure near the cervical spine. Every degree you raise this room's temperature increases the vascular swelling in his upper throat, sealing his trachea faster than your drugs can work."

The lead paramedic’s mouth opened slightly. "That’s... that’s mathematically impossible for an infant without trauma..."

"Turn off the heat," Emily snapped, looking at Frank Miller. "Do it now!"

Frank looked at Michael. Michael gave a single, sharp nod. Frank immediately lunged toward the radiator valve, twisting the heavy brass wheel shut with brute force.
