Chapter 4 - THE CALM SCAN OF THE TRAUMA SCENE

Michael Carter turned toward Emily, his expression a terrifying mix of fury, confusion, and raw grief.

"Emily. Get out," Michael growled, his voice dropping into a low, lethal register that had made grown men flee in terror. "This isn't your place. Step back."

She ignored him completely—a reaction so unprecedented in the Carter household that even Frank Miller froze in disbelief.

Emily didn't argue, nor did she attempt to explain herself. Instead, her eyes began a rapid, systematic visual analysis of the scene that took less than three seconds.

She scanned Noah’s graying complexion, noting the faint trace of clear, viscous foam pooling near the corner of his lower lip. Her eyes shifted down to the twisted, pale blue cashmere blanket wrapped tightly beneath his left shoulder, observing the awkward elevation of his upper torso. She looked at the heavy steam radiators along the wall, which were hissing loudly, pushing the nursery's ambient temperature above eighty degrees. She scanned the high-pressure oxygen setup, the cardiac monitor’s flatline feed, the intravenous lines that had failed to register a vein, and the discarded medication vials strewn across the marble table.

Her entire expression altered. The quiet, timid maid vanished completely, replaced by an unyielding, clinical intellect that read the room's complex physiological variables as if they were printed text.

She saw what four trained paramedics, three security guards, and a frantic father had completely overlooked—a subtle combination of environmental factors and mechanical obstruction that was actively killing the child while everyone focused on standard airway protocol.

She took a deep, steadying breath, her small hands hovering two inches above the infant's chest, her fingers steady despite the chaos around her.
