Chapter 9 - THE RETURN TO REALITY

The private dining room was quiet once more, save for the crackle of the fireplace and the sound of the rain outside.

Vincent looked at Luca, his eyes heavy with thirty years of shared history.

"What do we do with the rest of the table, Boss?" Vincent asked, gesturing toward the four terrified capos who remained seated, their hands flat on the linen.

"Dismiss them," Luca said softly. "The dinner is over. Double the perimeter detail at the townhome. Put the entire Five Points territory on high alert. If anyone from the Commission moves toward this block tonight, put them in the ground."

Vincent gave a single, respectful nod, gestured to the remaining men, and ushered them out of the room. Within forty seconds, the opulent dining hall had emptied completely, leaving only the wreckage of the dinner service, the flickering candles, and the three people standing near the sideboard.

Mara stood frozen, her chest rising and falling in rapid, shallow breaths. She looked down at Sofia, who was now resting her head against Mara’s neck, her small eyelids growing heavy, her tiny thumb slipping into her mouth.

Luca turned around. He looked at Mara—not as a boss looking at a server, and not as a man looking at a ghost—but as a husband who had spent three years living in an open grave.

He stepped forward, his tall frame stopping six inches from her. He reached out both hands, hovering them gently over her shoulders, waiting for her consent.

"Elena," he whispered, his voice cracking with an unbearable, raw vulnerability.

Mara looked up into his dark, searching eyes. The name no longer felt like a foreign word. It felt like an anchor dropped into a storm-tossed sea. She looked at his tattoos, at the sharp line of his jaw, at the small scar near his right temple where she remembered pulling his head against her chest during a winter storm in Lake Como.

"Luca..." she breathed, the name tasting of salt, tears, and long-buried love. "I... I remember the nursery. The white crib with the silver bells."

A single, hot tear rolled down Luca’s cheek, disappearing into his dark stubble. He closed the remaining distance, wrapping his massive, tattooed arms around both his wife and his daughter, pulling them into a tight, unbroken embrace against his chest.
