Chapter 5 - THE BLACK DOSSIER ON THE GOLD-RIMMED TABLE

Vincent returned through the service doorway ninety seconds later. In his hands, he carried a heavy, matte-black leather folder sealed with a dual-strand braided red cord and stamped with a silver-foil insignia: a private medical trust based out of Zurich, Switzerland.
He approached the head of the table, stopped beside Luca, and laid the folder flat against the dark polished wood, right between a crystal water goblet and an untouched arrangement of white orchids.
THUD.
The weight of the heavy paper and leather resonated through the table like a gavel.
Luca reached down with his right hand—the dark tattoos across his knuckles catching the flickering candlelight—and slid his thumb beneath the red braided cord, slicing it open with a single, sharp jerk. He peeled back the heavy leather cover, revealing a thick stack of high-grade forensic documentation, laminated photographs, and embossed hospital transfer certificates.
He did not look through them; he already knew every comma, every date, and every signature by heart. He had spent three agonizing years staring at these pages in the dead of night, drinking himself into oblivion while listening to his motherless infant cry down the hall.
Luca separated the top three documents: an original, glossy four-by-six clinical photograph, a laminated neurological evaluation chart, and an emergency surgical consent form stamped with a state seal.
With a slow, deliberate sweep of his hand, Luca slid the three documents across the polished table, stopping them directly in front of where Mara stood holding his daughter.
The lighting from the chandelier illuminated the top photograph with clinical clarity.
The image was taken from an elevated angle inside an intensive care isolation unit. It depicted a woman lying in an induced coma, her head wrapped in heavy white surgical gauze, an endotracheal tube taped securely to her mouth, her chest connected to a bank of cardiac monitors. Her face was bruised, her cheek scraped raw, but the contours of her jaw, the high arch of her eyebrows, and the shape of her lips were unmistakable.
Beneath the photograph lay the surgical authorization document.
Across the bottom line, written in bold, faded blue ballpoint ink, was a signature—a unique, elegant flourish where the initial letter loops backward, crossing the lower tail of the second letter with a distinctive double stroke.
Mara looked down.

Her breathing stopped entirely.
Her hazel eyes dilated, locking onto that handwriting with a visceral, sickening shock that felt as though the floor beneath her feet had dissolved into empty air.
