Chapter 2 - THE COMMAND AND THE EMBRACE

The silence was so dense that the gentle hiss of the paraffin candles inside their glass hurricanes sounded like blowing sand.

Luca Moretti did not move a single muscle for two agonizing seconds. His left arm remained wrapped around Sofia’s waist, his fingers spread broad across her red velvet dress. Slowly, with an agonizing, measured precision, Luca turned his head. His dark, deep-set eyes tracked up from the silver tray, across the white cotton of Mara’s blouse, and locked onto her pale, bewildered face.

His voice was a low, terrifying rasp that scraped against the silence.

"What did she say?" Luca asked.

Mara’s heart hammered violently against her ribs. She took an involuntary half-step backward, her knuckles turning bone-white against the tray.

"I... I don't know, sir," Mara stammered, her voice shaking beneath the sheer intensity of his stare. "She was just... she must have startled."

Sofia did not relent. Seeing Mara step back, the infant let out a sharp, frantic cry. She lunged forward again, her red-shod feet kicking against Luca’s ribcage, both arms outstretched toward Mara with desperate, pleading urgency.

"Mama!" Sofia cried louder, her cheeks flushing a bright, frantic pink, tears welling in her enormous gray-green eyes. "Mama, up! Up!"

Luca stood up.

The motion was sudden, fluid, and massive. His chair scraped backward two inches across the oak boards with a dull, heavy vibration. Towering over the table at six-foot-two, his broad shoulders threw a long, dark shadow across the white hydrangeas and the crystal flutes. The capos on either side shifted, their hands dropping naturally beneath the table edge toward their waistbands, reading the volatile tension coiling in their boss’s posture.

Luca took two heavy steps around the head of the table, closing the distance between them until he stood less than two feet from Mara. The scent of him—expensive cedarwood, black pepper, and cold night rain—washed over her senses, suffocating in its masculine intensity.

He extended both hands, holding his crying, thrashing daughter out toward her.

"Take her," Luca commanded.

The words were not an invitation; they were an absolute directive backed by an empire.

Mara looked down at the child, then up into Luca’s dark, unreadable eyes. "Sir, I can't... I’m just the server. It’s against company policy to handle guests'—"

"Take her," Luca repeated, his tone dropping an octave into an iron register that offered zero possibility of refusal.

Trembling, Mara set the heavy silver tray onto the edge of the mahogany sideboard with a faint, metallic clatter. She wiped her palms nervously against her black apron, took a shallow, shuddering breath, and reached out her arms.

The instant Mara’s hands slipped beneath Sofia’s small shoulders, the transformation was instantaneous and terrifying.

Sofia’s frantic cries vanished as if cut by a blade. The infant collapsed into Mara’s chest with a deep, shuddering sigh of pure, exhausted relief. Her tiny arms wrapped tightly around Mara’s neck, her small, sticky fingers digging into the collar of the white blouse, and she buried her damp cheek directly into the hollow of Mara’s throat, her soft dark curls pressing against Mara’s jawline.

Sofia closed her eyes, letting out a soft, contented whimper, completely still, perfectly at peace.

Mara stood frozen in the center of the opulent room, her arms instinctively cradling the child’s back. A strange, inexplicable warmth bloomed in her chest—a phantom sensation that felt so ancient, so heavy, and so devastatingly familiar that her knees nearly gave out beneath her.

She looked down at the tiny girl clinging to her like a lifeline, then looked up at the towering mafia boss, her hazel eyes wide with a mixture of awe and rising dread.

"I’ve never seen her before," Mara whispered, her voice cracking.

Luca stared down at them, his dark eyes wide, the muscle along his sharp jawline twitching violently beneath his trimmed stubble.

"That’s impossible," Luca said softly. "She doesn't let anyone hold her. Not her nannies. Not my sister. Nobody."

His eyes remained pinned to them, unblinking, tracking the impossible harmony between the server and his blood.
