Chapter 6 - Colonel Shaw Recognizes Her
Colonel Shaw walked toward them slowly.
Every soldier straightened.
Knox snapped his posture back into place, but the damage was already visible. He had tried to humiliate a lieutenant in front of his platoon. Instead, he had made them watch her outperform him without raising her voice.
Shaw stopped beside Nora.
“Lieutenant Hayes,” he said.
“Sir.”
“You requested full-course evaluation.”
“Yes, sir.”
“Reason?”
Knox cut in too quickly.
“Sir, with respect, she asked for special attention and—”
Shaw turned his head.
Knox stopped talking.
The colonel looked back at Nora.
“Reason?” he repeated.
Nora’s eyes stayed forward.
“Because this platoon’s obstacle-course pass rate dropped fourteen percent under Sergeant Knox, sir. Injury reports rose. Completion confidence dropped. But official notes listed the failures as individual weakness.”
The soldiers shifted.
Knox stared at her.
Shaw’s expression did not change, but something behind his eyes sharpened.
Nora continued.
“I wanted to see whether the course was breaking soldiers, or whether someone was teaching them to expect humiliation instead of instruction.”
The yard went silent.
This silence was different from the one before.
This one had weight.
Knox forced a laugh.
“Sir, this is ridiculous. She’s making this personal because she—”
“Because you kicked the starting block away?” Shaw asked.
Knox froze.
The colonel’s voice remained calm.
“I saw it.”
So had everyone else.
