Chapter 1 - The Woman They Wanted to Break

Lieutenant Nora Hayes did not answer when the soldiers laughed.

That was the first thing they noticed about her.

Not her height.

Not the tight bun pulled against the back of her head.

Not the olive-green tank top, tactical pants, or the lean strength in her shoulders.

Her silence.

At Fort Braddock’s obstacle course, silence was usually fear.

Men swallowed insults because they were afraid of Sergeant Caleb Knox. Recruits stared at the dirt because Knox loved making examples out of anyone who looked too proud, too small, too female, or too new.

But Nora’s silence was different.

It was not submission.

It was measurement.

Knox stood in front of the rope climb station with a whistle in his fist and arrogance spread across his face.

Behind him, two rows of soldiers waited in formation under a gray morning sky. Thick ropes hung from the wooden training frame, swinging slightly in the wind. Dirt covered the ground. Mud clung to boots. Everyone had heard the rumor before Nora arrived.

A female lieutenant from logistics wanted to test with the combat platoon.

That was how Knox described her.

Logistics.

As if the word meant soft.

As if rank, records, and quiet confidence were all decorations until a loud man decided they mattered.

Knox stepped close enough for Nora to smell coffee on his breath.

“You sure you’re in the right yard, Lieutenant?”

A few soldiers laughed.

Nora looked at the rope.

“I’m sure.”

May you like

Knox smiled.

That irritated him more than fear would have.
