Chapter 4 - The Climb

Knox hesitated for one second.

Only one.

But everyone saw it.

Then he snapped the stopwatch up.

“Go.”

Nora climbed.

Not fast in the frantic way recruits climbed when pride was louder than technique.

Fast in the way experienced soldiers moved when every motion had already been decided before the body began.

Hand over hand.

Boots bracing.

Hips close to the rope.

No wasted swing.

No desperate kick.

No shaking reach.

The first marker passed beneath her.

The laughter died completely.

One soldier in the back whispered, “Damn.”

Another elbowed him silent.

Knox’s face hardened.

He had wanted a struggle. A spectacle. A woman gasping halfway up while he barked something humiliating enough for the platoon to remember.

Instead, he was watching his own setup turn against him.

Nora climbed past the second marker.

Rain began to mist across the course, just enough to darken the rope and make the wood shine dull gray under the overcast sky.

Still she climbed.

Colonel Shaw took one step forward.

He was not watching her strength now.

He was watching the pattern.

The controlled breath.

The shoulder rotation.

The way she never looked for approval from the ground.

There were units that trained like that.

And they were not logistics.
