Chapter 5 - The Coffee Cup

The break-room confrontation began with something small.
Ethan left his coffee on the counter while taking a call.
Mara stood nearby reviewing messages.
I knew the cup was his because she had prepared it exactly the way he drank it—one sugar, no cream.
I lifted it for a sip.
Not because I wanted the coffee.
Because I wanted to see her reaction.
Mara crossed the room faster than I expected.
Her palm landed before I could lower the cup.
“Keep your hands off what’s mine.”
The confession was emotional, spontaneous, and witnessed by eleven employees.
Ethan’s response made it worse.
He did not ask why she struck a junior employee.
He told her to stop talking.
Then he called me Claire.
My real first name.
Several coworkers knew the CEO’s wife was named Claire.
Their faces changed one by one.
Mara looked from me to Ethan.
“Who is she?”
I wiped coffee from my jaw.
Ethan tried to take my arm.
I stepped back.
“Do not touch me.”
His eyes shifted toward the phone in my hand.
He knew what the black folder represented.
Bank transfers.
Vendor registrations.
Hotel records.
Recorded conversations.
Draft equity documents.
Proof of the affair could end our marriage.
Proof of the fraud could end careers and trigger criminal referrals.

Mara had slapped the woman she believed was competing for Ethan’s attention.
In reality, she had assaulted the person authorized to suspend them both.
