Chapter 2 - The Wife Nobody at Work Had Met

Ethan and I had been married for nine years.

At Vale Meridian Group, most employees knew he had a wife.

Almost none had met me.

That had been Ethan’s preference.

He said corporate events were exhausting and that I should not have to perform for clients. When investors asked why I rarely appeared, he described me as private and uninterested in business.

The truth was more complicated.

My father founded Vale Meridian before Ethan and I married. After his death, controlling shares passed into a family trust managed for my benefit.

Ethan became chief executive because he was charismatic, ambitious, and genuinely talented at winning contracts.

I remained chair of the trust’s oversight committee.

My name did not appear in everyday management announcements, but major ownership decisions still required my authorization.

Ethan enjoyed telling people the company was his.

I allowed it longer than I should have.

At home, he said public confidence depended on a single leader.

At work, he quietly erased the woman whose shares gave him that authority.

Then his behavior changed.

Late meetings multiplied.

He began guarding his phone.

Business trips included weekends that never appeared on the official calendar.

When I asked about Mara, he called her indispensable.

“She understands how much pressure I’m under.”

I wondered when my husband had stopped believing I did.

Then an anonymous envelope arrived at my attorney’s office.

Inside were photographs of Ethan leaving a hotel with Mara.

The affair was obvious.

The financial records attached beneath them were worse.
