Chapter 1 - He Was Alive

Finnley Dennis sat at the defense table in an orange county jumpsuit, clutching a framed photograph of his father against his chest.
Across the courtroom, Reagan Dennis screamed as two sheriff’s deputies restrained her by the arms.
“That letter is fake! He forged it!”
The packed gallery erupted in whispers.
On the evidence table lay a yellowed envelope, an old brass key, and certified records from Storage Unit 108.
Finnley lifted his face.
“Then why did Dad hide the key where only I would find it?”
His stepbrother, Carter, sat several rows behind Reagan. The color drained from his face as he silently begged his mother to stop talking.
Judge Eleanor Price opened the envelope.
“Mrs. Dennis, this court has reviewed the storage records.”
Reagan stopped struggling.
The judge looked down at the first page, then toward Finnley.
“Your husband was alive when you claimed he was dead.”
Finnley’s grip tightened around the photograph.
Three years in prison.
A funeral he had never been allowed to attend.
A house stripped of every trace of his childhood.
All of it had been built on a lie larger than the theft charge that destroyed his life.
The courtroom door opened.
An elderly man entered with the cemetery groundskeeper beside him.
Finnley recognized the walk before he saw the face clearly.
Slow.
Uneven.
But familiar.
The photograph slipped from his hands.
“Dad?”
Camden Dennis stopped in the aisle.

His eyes filled with tears.
“I’m sorry it took me so long to come back, son.”
