Chapter 5 - The Money Behind the Miracle
Linda rose from her seat.
“This is neither the time nor the place.”
Margaret faced her.
“When was the right time?”
Mark stepped into the aisle.
“Our family has handled this privately.”
Hannah looked at him.
“Handled what?”
Her father stopped.
Margaret removed the folded article from her handbag but did not display it to the guests. She handed it directly to Daniel.
Beside the article was a copy of the fundraiser’s original summary.
Hannah recognized the organization’s name.
“I thought insurance covered most of my care.”
Linda began crying.
“It was complicated.”
“How much was raised?”
No one answered.
Daniel read the amount.
“Three hundred eighty-six thousand dollars.”
Hannah felt cold.
Her parents had told her the fundraiser barely covered initial surgeries. For years, she paid ongoing medical expenses from disability benefits and remote accounting work.
Mark lowered his voice.
“We used part of it to keep the family stable.”
“How much?”
“The house needed repairs. Your mother stopped working. Emily needed therapy.”
Emily looked away.
The money had later funded private school, a car, and part of Emily’s college expenses. A family account still contained enough to contribute significantly toward the wedding.
The white roses.
The musicians.
The reception deposit.
Parts of Emily’s perfect day had been paid from money strangers gave to help Hannah rebuild her life.
Emily’s whisper had not only been cruel.
It had revealed what the family believed.
