Chapter 4 - What Daniel Never Knew
Daniel Callahan knew Hannah had been injured in a childhood accident.
That was all Emily told him.
She described the fire as an old family tragedy that made Hannah emotionally sensitive. Whenever Hannah declined gatherings, Emily told Daniel she preferred isolation.
Daniel believed his fiancée.
Margaret did not.
Months before the wedding, Margaret searched for information about the Whitmore family after noticing inconsistencies in Emily’s stories. She found an old newspaper article about the fire.
The photograph showed seventeen-year-old Hannah being carried toward an ambulance while firefighters treated Emily nearby.
The headline identified Hannah as the teenager who reentered the burning home and shielded her younger sister.
Margaret later found records from a community fundraiser created to help pay for Hannah’s rehabilitation.
The fundraiser raised almost four hundred thousand dollars.
But Hannah had once mentioned struggling with medical debt.
Margaret asked Daniel whether he knew where the donated money went.
He did not.
That morning, Margaret brought a printed copy of the old article inside her handbag. She planned to speak with Hannah privately after the ceremony.
Then she heard Emily tell her to move.
Margaret did not stand because she wanted to ruin the wedding.
She stood because no celebration deserved to be protected by humiliating the person whose suffering had made it possible.
Daniel walked down from the altar.
“Hannah saved you?”
Emily looked toward their parents.
