Chapter 6 - The Record They Could Not Ignore

By late afternoon, the forward operating base had locked down movement channels, separated communications teams, and pulled three scheduled patrols from compromised routes. The official language stayed careful: irregularity, suspicious pattern, temporary operational hold. Soldiers knew what it meant. Someone had been giving away the map.

Derek stood in the command tent with dust still in his eyebrows while two officers replayed the sequence from Sarah’s ridge observations. No readable maps were left open. No names were spoken casually. Everything had become controlled, tense, and formal in the way military rooms become when the truth is no longer deniable.

Major Keene, the acting commander, looked at Sarah. “You are saying the rally point was compromised before the squad moved.”

“Yes, sir.”

“And you chose to stop them with a warning shot rather than transmit.”

“The normal channel could not be trusted. A visible warning from elevation preserved the squad, forced the ambush cell to adjust, and created observable movement from hidden positions.”

Derek watched the room absorb her answer. It sounded cold in military language, but he had seen the shot land. He had felt the dust hit his boots. It had not felt cold. It had felt like being pulled backward by someone who refused to let him die stupidly.

Keene turned to him. “Staff Sergeant Holloway?”

Derek straightened. “Her shot saved us.”

The room went still.

He continued, voice rough but clear. “We were moving into the box. I didn’t see the whole field. She did.”

Sarah did not look at him. That was not false modesty. It was discipline. She had not done this for applause, and Derek understood now that people who wanted credit usually showed up long before sixty-one days alone in the heat.

Keene closed the folder. “Captain Mitchell’s observations will be entered into the operational record. The squad will be debriefed separately. Until further notice, no movement plans leave this room without compartment review.”

Derek looked at Sarah. She was already studying the next map.

Not resting.

May you like

Not celebrating.

Still watching.
