Chapter 5 - The Trap Breaks

The ambush did not explode the way the enemy intended. That was the point.

Once Derek’s squad stayed high, the geometry failed. The teams below had expected them in the channel, not on the ridge. The mobile element hesitated. The men near the palm line shifted too early. A base vehicle reversed hard from the road after Rodriguez relayed the warning through a secured alternate channel. Somewhere near the oasis, dust rose as hidden positions suddenly became visible through their own impatience.

Sarah watched without satisfaction. A broken trap was still dangerous. Men who lost surprise often tried to replace it with speed.

“Derek,” she said.

He noticed she used his first name and did not waste time asking how she knew it.

“Move your squad along the high line. Do not descend until the vehicles pull back behind the east berm.”

“That route is exposed.”

“The lower route is owned.”

He looked at her for one beat, then turned. “You heard her. High line. Move.”

Nobody questioned him. That was the second thing Sarah noticed. His men trusted him enough to absorb new truth quickly. That was why they were still alive.

As they moved, Sarah stayed above the ridge, tracking the shifting figures below through heat shimmer and dust. She gave Derek three more corrections: avoid the broken wall, wait at the shadow line, cross after the second vehicle clears. Each one came quietly. Each one arrived before the squad knew they needed it.

At the last crossing, Rodriguez looked back at her. “How many of them are down there?”

Sarah kept her eyes on the oasis. “Enough.”

“That’s not comforting.”

“It wasn’t meant to be.”

Kowalski almost laughed, then didn’t. The field below had gone too quiet again, and now he understood enough to fear quiet properly.

When the squad reached the safer ridge pocket, Derek turned back. “Come with us.”

Sarah shook her head.

“Captain.”

She looked at him then, and for the first time he saw the exhaustion under the calm. “If I leave this position before command secures the leak, we lose the only clean view of what they do next.”

Derek wanted to refuse. He had spent his whole career protecting people under his command, and she had just revealed she had been protecting him without ever being counted as part of his unit.

But Sarah was not asking permission.

She was telling him the condition of survival.
