Chapter 1 - The Shot in the Sand

The dust burst exploded inches in front of Staff Sergeant Derek Holloway’s boots, and for half a second every man behind him forgot how to breathe. Sand cracked upward from the rocky ridge path, sharp and violent, cutting across the trail with enough force to stop the entire squad cold. Derek jerked backward, one arm flying up to halt his men before instinct carried them another step.

“Freeze,” he snapped.

Private Rodriguez nearly slammed into Kowalski behind him. Chen dropped low near the rock wall, eyes sweeping the ridge line. Nobody fired. Nobody shouted contact. That was the wrong kind of impact for an attack, and Derek knew it before he had words for it. The angle was deliberate. The shot had not been meant to hit them. It had been meant to stop them.

Derek looked up.

Above them, standing against the brutal desert sun, was a woman in tan tactical pants and an olive combat shirt. Dust clung to her boots and hair. She was calm in a way the desert itself was calm before killing men who underestimated it. She held her rifle safely down and slightly away, not threatening them, not apologizing either.

Rodriguez stared back toward the route they had been taking below, the one that led toward the oasis and the rally point marked in every briefing. His face changed first. He saw the geometry before the others did: the shallow cut in the rocks, the blind turn, the line of approach that would have put them below three ridges at once.

“That shot saved us,” Rodriguez said, barely above a breath.

Derek climbed two steps higher, anger and confusion fighting in his face. “Who the hell are you?”

The woman did not move. Her eyes stayed past him, down toward the oasis.

“The rally point was a trap,” she said.
