Chapter 8 - The Woman in Her Own Foyer

Six months later, Olivia hosted a dinner in the mansion again.

Not an anniversary. Not a performance. Not a gathering designed to make Daniel look powerful in rooms he had not earned.

It was a foundation dinner for women rebuilding after financial abuse and coercive marriages. The guest list was small. Attorneys, counselors, donors, and three women whose stories Olivia had read twice before approving emergency grants. Mrs. Wells supervised the dining room with quiet pride.

The foyer looked different that evening, though Olivia had changed almost nothing.

The same chandelier glowed overhead. The same marble floor reflected the lights. The same staircase curved upward toward the private rooms. But the house no longer felt like a stage where Olivia had been expected to disappear.

It felt like hers again.

At the end of the dinner, Mrs. Wells found Olivia standing near the staircase railing where Vanessa’s red coat had once been placed.

“Are you all right, Mrs. Carter?”

Olivia smiled faintly. “Yes.”

“Truly?”

Olivia looked around the foyer.

“Truly.”

The divorce was not final yet, but the outcome was clear. Daniel would leave with what belonged to him and nothing he tried to absorb through proximity. Vanessa had vanished from their social circle after discovering Daniel could not deliver the life he advertised. Olivia did not follow either of them closely. Curiosity, she had learned, could become another form of attachment if she fed it too often.

Near midnight, after the guests left, Olivia walked to the security panel and placed her fingers lightly against the wall beside it.

That night, months earlier, she had tapped a screen and ordered both guests removed from her house.

But the real removal had taken longer.

Daniel’s voice. Daniel’s shame. Daniel’s need to be seen as richer, stronger, more important than he was. The version of Olivia who once made herself smaller so he would not feel small.

All of that had to leave too.

She turned off the foyer lights herself.

The chandelier faded.

The city beyond the glass remained bright.

Olivia stood alone in the quiet mansion and felt no emptiness in it.

May you like

Only space.

And this time, every inch of it belonged to her.
