Chapter 4 - The Anniversary Plan

Daniel whispered, “I never said that.”
Vanessa turned on him. “Don’t lie to me now.”
Olivia stood completely still.
Vanessa’s voice sharpened as panic made her careless. “You said she stayed out of sight. You said the house would be yours soon. You said after the anniversary, everything would change.”
The anniversary.
Tonight.
Olivia felt the words settle into place like the last pieces of a structure revealing its load-bearing failure.
Daniel had not brought Vanessa here impulsively. He had not made a foolish mistake because passion overcame judgment. He had chosen tonight because he believed Olivia would behave the way she always had—quiet, controlled, more concerned with dignity than confrontation.
He believed he could move his mistress into the house, humiliate his wife in her own foyer, and then manage the fallout through pressure, charm, and delay.
“Soon?” Olivia asked.
Daniel moved quickly. “She’s upset. She doesn’t know what she’s saying.”
Vanessa pointed at him. “You told me the marriage was dead.”
Olivia looked at Daniel. “Did you?”
He rubbed a hand over his face. “Olivia, please. This is complicated.”
“No,” she said. “It’s very clear.”
Vanessa looked between them, realizing too late that Daniel’s promise had been built on a foundation he did not own.
Mrs. Wells stepped closer but said nothing. She did not need to. Her presence reminded Olivia that someone else had seen the coat, the silence, the lie, and Daniel’s refusal to speak the one word that might have mattered.
Wife.
Olivia reached into the side pocket of her dress and took out her phone.
Daniel’s eyes dropped to it.
“Olivia.”
She tapped once. The security panel near the door lit softly, its screen blurred from where everyone stood.
A calm male voice answered through the intercom. “Security desk.”
Olivia looked directly at Daniel.
“Send the team to the foyer.”
Daniel’s face changed.
Vanessa stepped back. “Security? For what?”
Olivia turned to her.
“For trespassing.”
Daniel’s voice broke low. “Don’t do this.”
Olivia’s expression did not move.
“Remove both guests from my house.”
The elevator doors opened.

Two security guards in dark suits stepped into the foyer.
For the first time since entering, Daniel looked like a man who understood the floor beneath him was not his.
