Chapter 3 - The Voice on the Phone

The dispatcher’s name was Renee.
Chloe learned that because the woman said it twice, slowly, as if giving Chloe something steady to hold.
“My name is Renee. I’m staying right here. Officers are already coming.”
Chloe pressed the phone close to her mouth. “Don’t make them use sirens.”
“I’ll let them know to approach carefully,” Renee said. “Can you tell me your address?”
Chloe recited it in a whisper. She had memorized it because her mother made her practice for emergencies. At the time, Chloe thought emergencies meant fires or earthquakes. Not Dad. Not the living room. Not hiding from a man who used to carry her on his shoulders.
“You’re doing very well,” Renee said.
Chloe cried harder when she heard that.
Adults usually told her she was too sensitive. Too nervous. Too old to cry. Renee sounded like she meant it when she said Chloe was doing something right.
“Is your brother with you?”
“Yes. Ethan. He’s five.”
“Is he hurt?”
“No. I don’t think so. He’s scared.”
“Can you keep him quiet?”
Chloe looked at Ethan. His face was buried in her pajama sleeve, his little body shaking. She nodded, then remembered Renee could not see her.
“Yes.”
“Good. Don’t leave the closet unless I tell you, okay?”
“Okay.”
A door slammed downstairs.
Chloe stopped breathing.
David’s voice rose, rough and angry, but the words were too muffled to understand. Vince laughed once. Then Laura said something Chloe could not hear.
Renee’s voice came back gently.
“Chloe, listen to me. Look around the closet. Tell me three things you can see.”
Chloe blinked through tears. “Shoes.”
“Good.”
“A backpack.”
“Good.”
“Ethan’s dinosaur blanket.”
“That’s perfect. Keep your eyes there for me.”
For the next few minutes, Renee kept Chloe talking in whispers. Favorite color. School teacher’s name. Whether Ethan liked dinosaurs or trucks. The questions were small, almost silly, but they held Chloe’s mind in place while the rain hit the window and the house below stayed dangerous.
Then red and blue light flashed across the bedroom wall.

Chloe’s breath caught.
“They’re here,” she whispered.
