Chapter 2 - The Man the Neighbors Knew

Everyone in the neighborhood thought David Miller was a good man.

Before the warehouse laid him off, he waved while mowing the lawn, fixed Mrs. Alvarez’s dead battery without accepting money, and hung Christmas lights every December even when the roof was slick with frost. He coached Ethan’s preschool soccer games for half a season and brought donuts to Chloe’s class party when another parent forgot.

People liked that version of him.

Chloe had liked him too.

She remembered sitting on his shoulders during Fourth of July fireworks. She remembered him teaching her how to check bicycle tires. She remembered him dancing with her mother in the kitchen while Laura laughed and told him he had no rhythm.

Then the job disappeared.

Then the bottles appeared.

At first, David said he was only drinking because he could not sleep. Then because he was stressed. Then because Laura was nagging him. Then because the kids were too loud. Then because the world had taken everything from him and no one in the house respected what he had lost.

Vince Carter made everything worse.

Vince had been David’s friend from the warehouse, a man with a gravel voice and a laugh that always sounded mean after midnight. When Vince came over, the living room changed. Music got louder. Bottles emptied faster. David’s jokes sharpened into insults. Laura moved more carefully through her own house.

Chloe learned patterns no child should have had to learn.

If Mom asked them to stop before dinner, Dad would mock her.

If Dad called Mom “dramatic,” Chloe should take Ethan upstairs.

If Vince laughed too quietly, something bad was about to happen.

That night had started the same way.

Classic rock through the speakers. Beer bottles on the coffee table. Vince shouting at the television. David getting redder in the face each time Laura asked him to keep his voice down because the kids had school in the morning.

By ten, Chloe had heard glass break.

By eleven, furniture scraped hard across the floor.

By 11:30, Laura’s voice was thin and tired.

“David, please. Please just let Vince go home.”

Then came a sound Chloe could not explain.

Then silence.

That was when Chloe got Ethan.

She did not feel brave.

She felt like a child who had run out of adults.
