Chapter 1 - The Closet at 11:47

At exactly 11:47 p.m., Chloe Miller hid inside her bedroom closet with one hand over her little brother’s mouth and the other wrapped around a phone she was almost too scared to hold.

Rain hammered the windows of the small house outside Portland. The kind of rain that turned the streetlights blurry and made the whole house feel underwater. Ethan was only five, curled against her in dark dinosaur pajamas, shaking beneath the thick winter blanket their mother kept folded on the closet shelf.

Downstairs, something crashed.

Ethan flinched.

Chloe pulled him closer and whispered, “It’s hide-and-seek, remember?”

He nodded, but his eyes were too wide. Even at five, Ethan had learned the difference between a game and a lie told to keep him breathing quietly.

Chloe had locked the bedroom door before dragging him into the closet. She had turned off the lamp. She had pushed a laundry basket in front of the closet opening so, if her father came upstairs, maybe he would not notice the small gap in the door.

Then the house went silent.

Not peaceful.

Wrong.

Chloe knew the sounds of bad nights. She knew shouting, slamming doors, glass breaking, her mother begging in a voice that kept getting smaller. But silence was the sound that made Chloe’s stomach turn cold, because silence usually meant her mother had stopped trying to answer.

Her phone trembled in her hand as she dialed.

The operator answered almost immediately.

“911, what’s your emergency?”

Chloe tried to speak, but only a sob came out.

“Please,” she whispered. “Come quickly.”

The woman’s voice softened at once. “I’m here with you. Tell me your name.”

“My name is Chloe.”

“Where are you, Chloe?”

“In the closet.” Chloe swallowed hard, pressing her cheek against Ethan’s hair. “I locked my little brother in my room because Dad and Vince are downstairs with Mom again.”

The operator did not sound shocked. That helped somehow.

“Are you safe where you are?”

Chloe looked through the thin crack in the closet door toward her dark bedroom.

“I don’t know.”

Another heavy footstep sounded below.

Ethan began to cry without noise.

Chloe closed her eyes.

“My mom might not make it until morning,” she whispered.

And for the first time all night, saying the truth out loud made help feel possible.
