Chapter 5 - The Phone Call to Mark

Mark was sitting in his corner office at Vance Logistics Solutions—a firm that was currently six months behind on its commercial lease—when his mother’s frantic call came through.
"Mark!" Theresa screamed into the speaker the second he answered, her voice echoing through his quiet office. "You need to fix this right now! Your crazy wife just humiliated me in front of thirty-eight people at the club!"
Mark frowned, setting down his pen, pulling his designer readers off his nose. "Mother? What are you talking about? Elena is at the restaurant. She's working the lunch shift."
"She had her manager decline my platinum card!" Theresa shrieked, tears of rage finally bursting past her mascara. "She handed me a bill for fifteen thousand dollars! In front of Eleanor! In front of the entire country club committee! They walked out on me, Mark! They walked out!"
Mark sat up straight in his executive chair, a sudden cold pit opening in his stomach. "Wait... fifteen thousand dollars? What did you order, Mother?"
"I took the girls out for lunch! I told them it was on the house, just like we always do! And Elena stood there behind my chair like a servant, smiling, pouring wine, and then she left the building and told her staff to lock me in the dining room until I paid!"
Mark rubbed his temples, a headache throbbing behind his eyes. "Mother, just call Elena's personal line and tell her to sign off on the promotional write-off. She's probably just stressed out about the quarterly taxes."
"I called her five times!" Theresa sobbed into the phone. "She turned her phone off! Mark, you need to come down here right now and make her forgive this bill! Tell her manager that as the co-owner of the restaurant, you are ordering them to clear the tab!"
Mark hesitated. A heavy, uncomfortable silence lingered on the line.
"Mark?" Theresa demanded, her tone sharpening. "Did you hear me? Tell them you are the owner!"
Mark closed his eyes.
Because for three years, Mark had let his mother believe a magnificent, comfortable lie. He had let her believe he was the mastermind behind Aura’s success, the investor who provided the capital, the generous husband who allowed his wife to run his kitchen.

He had never told her the single, brutal truth that sat in a steel vault in downtown Austin.
"Mother..." Mark said, his voice dropping into a low, hollow whisper. "I can't clear the tab."
