Chapter 10 - The Fall of Vance Logistics

By 8:00 AM the following morning, the news of the scandal had spread through downtown Austin’s business community like wildfire.

The country-club women who had walked out of Aura the previous afternoon had spent the night spreading every detail of Theresa’s humiliation to their social networks. By breakfast, everyone in the city’s philanthropic circles knew that Theresa Stanhope had hosted a $15,000 lunch on a frozen credit card while her son was being investigated for corporate fraud.

At 9:15 AM, two investigators from the Travis County District Attorney’s Office arrived at the offices of Vance Logistics Solutions carrying a commercial search warrant.

They seized Mark’s desktop computers, financial hard drives, and corporate ledgers.

By noon, Mark’s primary commercial bank accounts had been frozen under a temporary restraining order issued by a state district judge, preventing him from transferring a single dollar out of state.

In a desperate bid to save her son from public arrest, Theresa was forced to sell her beloved vintage gold jewelry and liquidate her emergency municipal bond portfolio—money her late husband had left her thirty years prior—to pay off the $14,862.40 tab at Aura.

At 3:30 PM, David called my private line while I was reviewing seasonal produce invoices in my office above the kitchen.

"Chef Elena," David said, his tone filled with quiet satisfaction. "Mrs. Theresa Stanhope just walked into the lobby."

"Is she asking for me?" I asked.

"No," David replied. "She was holding a cashier's check for fourteen thousand eight hundred and sixty-two dollars and forty cents. She handed it to the host, didn't say a single word, and left in an Uber."

"Her Mercedes was repossessed two hours ago, David," I noted dryly. "Deposit the check immediately."
