Chapter 7 - The Unseen Net

"Julian..." Vincent muttered, the name tasting like ash and poison in his mouth. His hand rose to his throat, his fingers digging into the tattoo of the crowned serpent as though the ink were constricting around his windpipe. "You're lying. You're bluffing to get out of this room. Julian is dead. I watched the fire burn for six hours."

"Check your phone, Vincent," Claire said calmly, pointing a manicured finger toward the nightstand where his gold-plated private terminal sat silently beside the wedding photograph. "Go on. Pick it up."

Vincent did not want to look, but his body moved on instinct, driven by an acute, creeping terror that overrode his pride. He lunged across the rug, snatching the phone from its wireless charging pad. His thumb pressed the biometric sensor.

The screen lit up with sixty-four unread notifications, all logged within the last nine minutes.

The first was a message from Santino, his head of personal security: Boss, the lobby feeds are black. The elevator controls have been remotely overridden from an external IP in Zurich. We can't access the penthouse.

The second was from his chief financial comptroller in Nassau: Emergency protocol initiated. All secondary reserve accounts in Luxembourg, Grand Cayman, and Vaduz were emptied at 00:15 GMT via master biometric clearance code Omega-Seven. We have zero liquidity.

Omega-Seven. A clearance code that had belonged to only one man in the history of the Moretti syndicate—the founder's youngest son, a code that Vincent had believed was buried twelve years ago beneath the rubble of the Palermo docks.

The third notification was a single text message from an unregistered, heavily encrypted satellite number. It contained only five words:

Take good care of Claire.

Vincent dropped the phone onto the silk duvet. The device bounced softly, coming to rest against the edge of the divorce decree, right beside his wedding ring and the black USB drive.

"You didn't just plan an escape," Vincent whispered, turning slowly to face her, his eyes wild, the blood pounding in his ears with the force of a hydraulic press. "You orchestrated a coup. From inside my own house."

"You made the mistake of thinking I was your possession," Claire said, her hand resting firmly on the suitcase handle. "Julian knew better. He knew I was the only person who lived inside your defenses. For six months, every night you fell asleep after your third tumbler of Macallan, I inserted his bypass hardware into your private console. Every wire transfer you authorized, Julian mirrored. Every offshore company you registered, he assumed nominal ownership through proxy trusts you signed without reading."

"You sold me out to a ghost," Vincent snarled, his voice breaking into a guttural rasp. He stepped toward her, his face twisted in a mask of absolute hatred and cornered panic. "I'll kill you both. I'll tear this city apart with my bare hands! I'll call the Five Families—"

"The Five Families received their copies of your private offshore ledgers twenty minutes ago, Vincent," Claire interrupted, her voice dropping into an arctic whisper. "They now know that you skimmed forty percent off their collective drug shipments through the Brooklyn terminals for the past five years. By sunrise, there won't be a single family from Boston to Miami that won't have a bounty on your head."
