Chapter 5 - The Architects of Flight

Claire looked at Vincent’s face—at the hard, sculpted features she had once traced with loving fingers, at the cruel mouth that had whispered promises of safety while orchestrating betrayals in the dark. For six long months, she had endured his touch, his patronizing gifts, and his casual dismissals, nursing the secret fire of this exact moment. Every evening she spent sitting quietly at her vanity had been spent calculating distances, memorizing license plates, and studying the blind spots of the penthouse’s closed-circuit security feeds.
Her right hand tightened around the handle of her suitcase, her knuckles turning bone-white against the black leather. A faint, inscrutable smile curved the edges of her lips—a expression Vincent had never once seen on her face during their seven years of marriage. It was the smile of someone who had already stepped over the cliff and realized she had wings.
She turned her body, squaring her shoulders squarely with his.
"I have help," Claire said.
The three words hung in the warm, scented air of the bedroom like the sudden smell of ozone before a lightning strike.
Vincent’s brow twitched. A short, incredulous bark of laughter tore from his throat, though it died before it reached his eyes. "Help? Who? Your sister in Vermont? She thinks I'm a legitimate logistics developer. That miserable private investigator you hired in year three? I put him in a concrete footing beneath the new harbor pier five years ago. Who in this entire rotten state would dare touch you, Claire? Who would sign their own family’s death warrant by stepping between Vincent Moretti and his wife?"
"You think everyone fears you," Claire replied, her voice soft, carrying a slow, melodic cadence that chilled him to the core. "You think that fear is the same as loyalty. But fear is an expensive currency, Vincent. It depreciates every time you crush someone who served you. Every time you take what isn't yours. Every time you bury a body and pretend the earth forgets."
Vincent took a threatening step forward, his chest heaving, his fists clenching at his sides until his knuckles cracked. The open collar of his shirt gaped, revealing the violent ink on his skin. "Give me the name," he demanded, his voice thick with rising venom. "Tell me who set up the shell accounts. Tell me who gave you the decryption protocols. Because whoever they are, Claire, I promise you on my mother's soul, their execution will take three days, and I will force you to sit in the front row."
"You always think in terms of bullets and blood," Claire said, looking down at her diamond pendant, then back at him. "You never understood that the most dangerous weapon in this world isn't a gun or a hitman. It's patience. And someone has been very, very patient with you, Vincent."

He stopped three feet from her, close enough to smell the familiar jasmine scent of her perfume mixed with the sharp tang of rain from her coat. He could reach out and grab her wrist, twist the suitcase from her grasp, and lock her in the wine cellar until she gave up every password. His muscles coiled to strike.
"Who?" Vincent spat, his jaw tight, his voice reduced to a harsh whisper.
