Chapter 10 - Dawn Over the Ruins

Claire turned her back on Vincent Moretti for the final time.

She did not look at the bed. She did not look at the signed divorce papers, the diamond ring glistening against the dark silk, or the black USB drive that contained the total ruin of the Moretti dynasty. She reached down, took a firm grip on the handle of her black suitcase, and walked past Julian into the wide, marble-floored corridor of the penthouse.

Behind her, Vincent collapsed onto his knees on the edge of the mattress. His hands clutched his head, his fingers tangling in his dark, swept-back hair as the weight of his total ruin crashed over him. The silence of the eighty-story glass cage pressed down upon him like iron. In less than three hours, the sun would rise over the skyline, and with it would come the black sedans of the Five Families, the federal marshals with their search warrants, and the silent executioners sent to balance the ledger he had forged in blood.

Julian lingered in the doorway for a single, fleeting second. He looked down at the kneeling, broken figure of his older brother, his eyes cold and devoid of pity.

"Twelve years ago, you left me to burn in the dark, Vincent," Julian whispered into the stillness of the room. "Consider this your eviction from the light."

Without waiting for an answer, Julian turned and pulled the heavy walnut double doors closed, the brass latch clicking shut with a dry, definitive snap that sounded like the lid of a tomb sealing forever.

In the foyer, the brass-and-glass elevator stood open, its interior illuminated in soft white light. Claire was already inside, standing tall with her cream cashmere robe pulled comfortably around her satin gown, her face turned toward the mirrored walls. When Julian stepped inside beside her, the doors slid shut with a smooth, pneumatic hiss.

The elevator descended through the core of the tower, dropping seventy floors in uninterrupted silence.

When the doors parted on the ground floor, the private garage was quiet and still. A single black armored sedan sat idling near the security gate, its exhaust drifting into the cool, damp night air. The rain had begun to taper off, replaced by the first gray, lavender ribbons of dawn creeping across the eastern horizon.

Claire stepped out onto the damp pavement, inhaling the cold morning air deep into her lungs. It smelled of wet asphalt, river mist, and absolute, unburdened freedom. She felt lighter than she had in seven long years, as though the diamond pendant around her neck and the memories of the penthouse above had dissolved into vapor.

The driver opened the rear door for her. Claire loaded her suitcase into the back, paused for a moment to look up at the towering glass monolith rising into the low clouds, and then stepped into the vehicle.

Julian climbed into the seat beside her, the heavy doors closing with a solid, reassuring thud that shut out the city.

"Where to first?" Julian asked quietly as the car accelerated smoothly into the morning streets, leaving the Moretti tower behind in the rear-view mirror.

Claire looked forward through the windshield at the open highway stretching out toward the dawn. A faint, genuine smile curved her lips for the first time in seven years.

"Anywhere," Claire said softly. "As long as it's far from here."
