Chapter 7 - TYLER COMES TO THE HOSPITAL
Tyler arrived at the hospital four hours after the rescue.
He came with an attorney.
That told me almost everything before he spoke.
He asked to see his wife and daughter. Hospital security refused because Rachel had requested no contact.
Tyler stood in the corridor and performed panic.
He said Rachel had driven away after an argument.
He claimed he believed she was going home.
He denied locking the car.
Then a detective asked why his voice had been captured on Rachel’s phone saying to leave them inside.
Tyler changed the story.
He said it was dark humor taken out of context.
It had been bright daylight.
The detective asked about Vanessa.
Tyler called her a coworker.
The detective asked about Noah.
Tyler requested to speak privately with his attorney.
Vanessa was interviewed separately. She initially claimed she had been at a spa during the incident.
Her vehicle’s location history placed her at Brookstone Drive.
The monitor connection placed her inside the house.
A neighbor’s doorbell camera showed Tyler and Vanessa leaving together while Rachel’s sedan remained on the driveway.
Tyler later argued that he intended to return after “giving Rachel time to calm down.”
That explanation did not account for turning off the engine, taking the key or discussing how long to wait before anonymously calling emergency services.
He and Vanessa were not instantly convicted.
There were hearings, evidence reviews and months of legal work.
Tyler was charged in connection with child endangerment, unlawful restraint, conspiracy and related offenses. Vanessa faced allegations based on her participation, planning and failure to seek help.
The family court issued emergency orders protecting Rachel and Lily.
Tyler’s contact with Lily was suspended initially, then addressed through supervised conditions while the criminal case proceeded.
Noah was not punished for what his parents did. Vanessa’s mother entered a temporary safety arrangement approved by child-welfare authorities so he could remain with family while investigators assessed the home.
A paternity test later confirmed Tyler was Noah’s father.
