Chapter 5 - THE MOTHER THEY WERE INVENTING
The affair was not the only deception.
For nearly four months, Tyler had been constructing a custody case before Lily was even born.
He kept a private folder labeled RACHEL INCIDENTS.
Inside were photographs of ordinary postpartum exhaustion presented as neglect.
Rachel asleep beside folded laundry.
An unwashed bottle in the sink.
A half-finished meal left on the table after she became nauseated.
Tyler wrote captions beneath each image.
Unable to maintain household.
Leaves feeding equipment unattended.
Sleeps during infant-care periods.
He created a calendar listing supposed mood swings and unsafe behavior. Several entries described incidents that never happened.
In one, he claimed Rachel drove while disoriented.
She had not driven since the surgery.
In another, he said she threatened to disappear with the baby.
The message attached as proof had been sent from Rachel’s phone while she was asleep.
Tyler had typed it himself.
He also contacted a family-law attorney and asked what evidence would be needed to obtain emergency custody from a mother suffering a postpartum psychiatric crisis.
The attorney answered generally and advised him to contact medical professionals if anyone was in immediate danger.
Tyler used the information as a checklist.
He and Vanessa discussed waiting until after Lily’s birth, then creating an incident severe enough to justify emergency intervention.
Their original plan was not to kill Rachel or Lily.
It was to make Rachel look incapable.
That distinction did not make the locked car less dangerous.
Messages recovered from Vanessa’s phone showed the plan:
Tyler would leave Rachel inside long enough to create panic.
Vanessa would record the audio.
Then an anonymous caller would report a confused woman sitting in a hot vehicle with an infant.
Tyler would arrive after emergency responders and claim Rachel had locked herself inside during a breakdown.
They expected him to appear like the worried husband.
They underestimated the temperature.
They underestimated Rachel’s weakness after surgery.
And they did not expect me to follow the phone’s location.
One message from Vanessa was sent seven minutes before I arrived:
How long do we wait before calling?

Until she sounds bad enough.
