Chapter 3 - WHAT RACHEL REMEMBERED

Rachel woke in the hospital that evening.
Lily had been cooled gradually, examined and admitted for observation. The doctors believed I reached them in time.
Rachel was dehydrated and severely overheated. Her surgical incision had been strained while she struggled inside the vehicle, but she did not require another operation.
When she opened her eyes, she immediately asked for the baby.
I placed Lily’s photograph in her hand and told her she was safe.
Rachel began crying.
Not loudly.
The tears simply ran toward her ears while she stared at the ceiling.
“I knew about Vanessa,” she whispered.
Vanessa Cole had worked with Tyler at a regional insurance brokerage. He described her as a senior account manager and occasionally complained that she called too often after business hours.
Rachel noticed messages months before Lily was born.
Tyler insisted Vanessa was going through a divorce and needed professional support.
When Rachel found a hotel receipt, he accused her of becoming paranoid because of pregnancy hormones.
Then he contacted her obstetrician privately and said Rachel was showing signs of irrational jealousy.
The physician documented his concern but did not diagnose Rachel with anything.
Tyler later used that note as if it were medical proof.
On the day of the attack, he told Rachel they needed to take Lily to an additional newborn-weight appointment.
There was no appointment.
He drove them to the house where I found them and said he needed to retrieve paperwork from a colleague.
Rachel recognized Vanessa through the front window.
She tried to take Lily and leave.
Tyler removed the car key and told her they would discuss everything calmly.
Then he got out.
Rachel reached for the door but was still weak from surgery. Before she could climb across the console, Tyler remotely locked the vehicle.
The air conditioning remained on for several minutes.
Then the engine stopped.
She called him repeatedly.
When he finally answered, Vanessa was with him.
Rachel demanded to know why there was another car seat beneath the blanket.
Tyler laughed.
Then he said the sentence I heard when I arrived:
“Leave them in there. She needs to learn who controls this family.”
Rachel believed he would return quickly.
Instead, she watched Tyler and Vanessa leave in a white SUV parked behind the house.

They drove away together.
They knew Lily was still inside.
