Chapter 2 - The Ticket of Exile

Elena’s lips trembled as she looked up at Raymond. She didn't speak immediately; her arms simply tightened around sleeping four-year-old Leo, pulling her grandson closer to her chest as if protecting him from an invisible cold wind.

With her trembling right hand, Elena reached into the deep pocket of her grey cardigan and pulled out a plain white paper envelope.

She offered it to Raymond, her hand shaking violently.

"Beatrice gave this to us yesterday morning," Elena whispered, her voice cracked and hollowed out by days of silent humiliation. "She brought two private security guards to the cottage... she told me to pack our things before noon."

Raymond snatched the envelope from her hand, pulling out the folded document inside. It was a printed, one-way international airline ticket to a small town in Eastern Europe—Elena’s birthplace, a place she hadn't lived in since she was a teenager.

Raymond stared down at the ticket. The name ELENA MERCER & LEO MERCER was printed under the passenger section, booked on a flight departing in less than forty-five minutes.

"Beatrice said..." Elena choked back a sob, tears spilling down her pale cheeks as she looked up at the silver-haired patriarch. "She said Liam is dead... so we’re not family anymore. She said a widow has no legal standing in the Mercer estate."

Raymond did not explode in anger. He did not scream or slam his fist against the metal bench.

Instead, his entire posture went deadly calm. The color drained slightly from his face, replaced by a cold, terrifying stillness that was far more dangerous than any outburst of rage. His hazel eyes hardened like polished steel as he slowly folded the paper ticket in half and slid it into his blazer pocket.

He looked down into Elena’s tear-streaked face, his voice dropping into a low, unshakeable register:

"Beatrice does not speak for this family."
