Chapter 1 - The Cold Echo of Terminal 4

The terminal at John F. Kennedy International Airport was a chaotic sea of rushing travelers, rolling luggage, and neon arrival screens. Yet amidst the noise of thousands of strangers moving through Terminal 4, sixty-four-year-old Raymond Mercer stood completely still near the edge of the baggage claim carousel.
Raymond was a man of unmistakable presence. Tall, with neatly styled silver hair and sharp hazel eyes, he wore a tailored tweed blazer over a dark blue button-down shirt and pressed dress trousers. As the patriarch of one of Long Island’s most prominent real estate families, Raymond was accustomed to order, respect, and absolute control over his environment. But six months ago, his world had been shattered by the tragic, sudden death of his thirty-four-year-old son, Liam.
Since Liam’s funeral, Raymond had been consumed by grief and complex corporate management, leaving the day-to-day affairs of the family’s estate in the hands of his younger sister, Beatrice. He had believed his daughter-in-law, Elena, was resting peacefully at the family’s secondary cottage in upstate New York with his four-year-old grandson, Leo.
That belief ended the moment Raymond’s gaze drifted toward a cold metal bench tucked against a concrete pillar near Carousel 3.
Sitting on the bench was thirty-two-year-old Elena Mercer. Her long brown hair was tied back in a loose, messy knot, stray strands framing a pale, exhausted face with eyes red from endless crying. She wore an oversized grey wool cardigan over a blue linen shirt and faded brown trousers.
Clutched tightly in her arms was four-year-old Leo, asleep from pure physical exhaustion, his small head resting heavily against his mother's chest. Leo had soft brown hair and wore a light striped cotton hoodie with denim pants, his small chest rising and falling in deep, quiet breaths.
Lined up beside Elena’s worn brown boots were three scuffed, dusty suitcases—the sum total of her personal belongings.
Raymond’s heart slammed into his ribs. His hand tightened around his leather briefcase as he broke into a fast, urgent stride across the polished tile floor.

"Elena?" Raymond called out, his voice sharp with shock and fatherly concern. "Elena, what is this? Why are you here?"
Elena looked up, her red-rimmed eyes widening in fear and confusion as she recognized her father-in-law standing over her in the crowded airport terminal.
