Chapter 9 - The Unseen Authority

Cassie stood calmly amidst the stunned silence. She did not return the salute immediately; instead, she looked at the Admiral with a cool, professional nod, acknowledging his presence without breaking her disciplined posture.
She turned slowly toward the trembling Military Police officer.
The MP hurriedly extended both hands, holding her plastic-cased ID badge as if presenting a sacred artifact.
Cassie reached out with her gloved hand and calmly took her ID back from the guard. As she took it, her thumb moved smoothly over the surface, covering the printed rank line, the classified department code, and the official title printed in bold black ink.
The camera, like the watching crowd, never clearly revealed the specific rank or title printed on the card—only the heavy, gold-embossed seal of the highest levels of the United States military establishment.
She tucked the lanyard back inside the collar of her dark trench coat, buttoning the top toggle to conceal the card once more beneath her lapel.
The Admiral stepped to the side, clearing a direct path toward the gangway. He gestured toward the ship’s main deck, extending his hand in a gesture of absolute deference.

“The Captain’s cabin has been prepared for your briefing, Ma’am,” the Admiral said softly. “Whenever you are ready.”
He stood aside as if the woman in the dark coat outranked every single officer standing on the San Diego pier.
