Chapter 4 - The Tossed Credentials

Brandon didn’t even bother to look down at the card in his hand. Swept up in his own performance and eager to prove his authority in front of his peers, he held the badge up, waving it toward the half-dozen sailors who had now stopped their work to watch the confrontation unfolding near the gangway.
“Let’s see what fake pass got you onto my base,” Brandon announced loudly, his voice echoing off the gray steel hull of the USS Sterett.
At that exact moment, two base Military Police officers, who had been patrolling the pier perimeter near the ceremonial bleachers, noticed the commotion. The lead MP, a twenty-eight-year-old petty officer in crisp security gear, complete with a sidearm and tactical vest, pushed through the crowd of onlookers, his face fixed in a grimace of routine irritation.
“What’s the problem here, Owens?” the MP asked, stepping between Brandon and Cassie.
Brandon didn’t hesitate. With a dismissive flick of his wrist, he tossed the black badge holder directly toward the young MP’s chest.
“She’s impersonating an officer,” Brandon declared, gesturing arrogantly toward his sister. “Got onto the pier without clearance. Escort her out before the Admiral comes down.”
The MP caught the badge neatly in mid-air.

“Alright, let’s see it,” the MP muttered, flipping the plastic case over to check the visitor credentials.
He looked down at the printed surface of the card.
