Chapter 25 - THE FINAL UPLINK

A deep, hum vibrated through the entire granite cavern as the black monolith reacted to the sudden surge of quantum data flowing through Pendelton's interface.

The non-reflective black surface of the fifty-foot structure suddenly burst into life, lines of brilliant gold light cascading across its seamless hull like liquid gold flowing through microscopic channels.

UPLINK COMPLETE: 100%. MASTER ARCHIVE TRANSMITTED TO ORBITAL ARRAY SATELLITE 'ARCHANGEL-ONE'.

The remaining two mercenaries in the cavern froze, their night-vision goggles overwhelmed by the sudden, blinding flash of golden light emanating from the monolith.

Rhodes and Vance capitalized on the moment instantly.

Two swift, synchronized shots echoed through the cathedral-like room, neutralizing the remaining threats before the operatives could recover their senses.

Silence returned to Sub-Level Zero.

The golden lines of light on the black monolith began to fade slowly, receding back into the smooth, non-reflective composite hull until the structure returned to its silent, ancient darkness.

Pendelton disconnected his hardware briefcase, locking the heavy aluminum latches with a crisp, dual click.

"The master archive is secured in deep orbital storage, Director," Pendelton reported, his breathing returning to its normal, measured pace. "The Prometheus shadow network no longer has access to the origin source. Their global infrastructure is officially dead in the water."

Cassie walked over to the fallen lead mercenary, using the toe of her boot to turn his shoulder over. Pinned to his tactical vest was a simple silver lapel pin depicting a stylized rising sun—the crest of the global procurement syndicate that had hunted Colonel Thornton and manipulated defense contracts for thirty years.

She reached down, plucked the pin from the vest, and tossed it into the deep, dark drainage pit at the edge of the cavern floor.

"Clean the chamber, Senior Chief," Cassie ordered softly, turning toward the lift corridor. "Collapse the primary ventilation shaft behind us. This site goes back into the dark forever."

"Understood, Director," Rhodes replied, saluting her with a brief, respectful nod. "We'll leave this place like we were never here."
