Chapter 2 - 99.9998 PERCENT

Daniel caught his mother's wrist before she could lunge again.
“Stop.”
Margaret jerked away.
“Give me that envelope.”
Claire almost laughed.
“You've spent six months begging for this test.”
“I said give it to me.”
“No.”
Behind them, somebody had already called 911.
Claire could hear one of the guests speaking rapidly into a phone.
Good.
She went back to Sophie.
The chain was not padlocked.
Margaret had wound it twice around the porch post, clipped the hook through a lower link, then pulled the slack tight.
Daniel knelt on the other side.
Claire immediately said:
“Don't touch her.”
His hands stopped.
Sophie looked at him.
That expression would stay with Daniel longer than the slap stayed with Claire.
Not hatred.
Fear.
He moved back.
Claire got the clip loose.
One loop.
Then another.
The chain fell onto the patio.
Sophie threw both arms around her.
Claire held her.
Margaret said:
“She took something from my study.”
Claire looked over Sophie's shoulder.
“You restrained a seven-year-old.”
“She needed to stay still until—”
“Until what?”
Margaret stopped.
Until Claire arrived?
Until Daniel?
Until the party ended?
Whatever answer she had planned no longer sounded safe enough to say.
Police arrived nine minutes later.
So did paramedics after one guest reported Sophie had been physically restrained.
Sophie had no serious injury.
Light abrasions along one forearm.
A red pressure mark at her waist where the chain had pulled against her dress.
Nothing life-threatening.
Enough.
Claire told the first officer Daniel had slapped her.
Daniel did not deny it.
He stood ten feet away and said:
“I did.”
The officer separated him immediately.
Margaret started talking about misunderstanding.
Private property.
Discipline.
Family.
Nobody seemed impressed.
Claire stayed with Sophie.
The unopened envelope stayed inside her handbag until Sophie was sitting safely in the back of an ambulance with a female EMT checking her arm.
Daniel stood outside the patio gate with another officer.
Claire walked toward him.
He looked at the bag.
“Is it really a paternity test?”
“Yes.”
“You did it?”
“We did it.”
Daniel frowned.
Then remembered.
Two weeks earlier.
A private accredited lab.
Cheek swabs.
Chain-of-custody forms.
Daniel had gone because Margaret had spent months insisting that an old DNA test proved Sophie couldn't be his.
Daniel had told Claire:
“I don't believe Mom.”
Then agreed to test anyway.
Claire had never forgotten the contradiction.
The result arrived that morning.
She had not opened it.
She had brought it to Sophie's birthday party because Margaret had promised this would be the last time she raised the accusation.
Daniel said quietly:
“Open it.”
Claire almost refused.
Then she realized she needed the answer too.
Not because she doubted.
Because she wanted that part finished.
She tore the envelope.
Pulled out the report.
Read.
Then handed it to Daniel.
He stared at the number.
Probability of paternity: 99.9998%.
Conclusion: Daniel cannot be excluded as Sophie's biological father. The statistical evidence strongly supports paternity.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Sophie was his daughter.
Exactly as Claire had always said.
Exactly as Daniel claimed he believed.
Claire watched him.
“You made me prove something I never lied about.”
“I know.”
“No. You don't get to fix that sentence yet.”
Daniel nodded.
Fair.
Then he looked toward Margaret.
She was speaking to an officer near the patio doors.
Her eyes were not on Sophie.
Not on the chain.
They were on the DNA report in Daniel's hand.
Daniel walked toward her.
Claire followed.
He held up the page.
“She is mine.”
Margaret said nothing.
“You knew.”
Still nothing.
Claire suddenly remembered something.
The first test.
Not this one.
The paper Margaret had brought to their house six months earlier.
A home kinship report.
Margaret had claimed it proved Sophie was not biologically connected to the family.
Claire had photographed it before Margaret took it away.
She pulled out her phone.
Found the image.
The heading:
GRANDPARENTAGE RELATIONSHIP ANALYSIS
Tested subjects:
Margaret.
Sophie.
Conclusion:
Biological grandparent relationship not supported.
Claire slowly looked from the photograph—
to Daniel.
The new test proved Daniel was Sophie's biological father.
The old test said Margaret was not Sophie's biological grandmother.
Only one of those facts should have been impossible.
Daniel looked at his mother.
Margaret whispered:
“Don't.”
May you like
He stared.
“What aren't you telling me?”
