Chapter 12 - ELAINE DIDN'T WAIT FOREVER

Before Daniel opened Richard's old test, Elaine gave him one more part of the story.
Not because Margaret exposed it.
Because Elaine did.
At twenty-one, Daniel's age not hers, Elaine had stopped writing again.
For five years.
Why?
Her second marriage was collapsing.
She had developed a drinking problem.
Not dramatic daily collapse.
Enough.
She missed two mediated telephone appointments Richard arranged.
One because she was intoxicated.
One because she simply did not call.
Margaret documented both.
Elaine hated the record.
Did not dispute it.
Then Richard offered Elaine another settlement.
$40,000.
Not to relinquish Daniel.
That had happened long before.
This payment settled remaining employment claims and required Elaine to stop contacting Richard's office directly.
Elaine signed.
For two years, she sent nothing.
Margaret used those two years later as proof Elaine had abandoned Daniel completely.
Not true.
Also not nothing.
Daniel asked:
“Did you ever decide it was easier not to know me?”
Elaine looked at him.
“Yes.”
That answer hurt.
It also made her believable.
“I had another son. A job. A mortgage. A husband who hated the entire Carter story. Some years I told myself you had a better life without me.”
“Did I?”
“I don't know.”
Good.
Then Elaine said:
“Margaret was cruel to me eventually. But she also did something I could not do then.”
“What?”
“Stayed.”
Daniel looked away.
He had wanted Elaine to be the clean alternative.
Birth mother wronged.
Adoptive mother liar.
Simple.
Life refused.
Margaret stayed and loved him.
Margaret also controlled the truth until love became possession.
Elaine surrendered him.
Elaine also tried to return.
Richard acknowledged him.
Richard also built agreements that kept the scandal quiet.
Nobody came out clean.
Sophie did.
She was seven.
She carried none of it.
Claire made sure every adult remembered.
Then envelope eleven arrived.
Daniel did not open it alone.
He invited Elaine.
Not Margaret.
Claire attended by video because physical proximity restrictions around Daniel were still being managed carefully.
His attorney opened the scanned certified copy.
Old laboratory header.
Infant Daniel Carter.
Richard Carter.
Test method primitive by modern standards.
Blood group and early DNA markers.
Conclusion:
Results do not exclude Richard Carter as the biological father. Probability estimate insufficient for definitive inclusion. Further testing recommended.
Daniel exhaled.
Not the bomb Margaret feared.
No exclusion.
No proof.
An ambiguous thirty-five-year-old test.
Claire asked:
“So this changes nothing?”
Daniel's attorney answered:
“It changes certainty. Not legal parentage.”
Richard remained Daniel's legal father.
Biological probability still unresolved.
Then Daniel noticed handwriting at the bottom.
Richard's.
Do not repeat. I know what I am choosing.
Daniel read it twice.
Elaine started crying.
“He knew.”
“What?”
“That it might not be him.”
“Yes.”
“And he chose you anyway.”
Maybe.
Daniel hated how much comfort he took from that.
Then the attorney turned the page.
A separate lab requisition.
Same date.
Second requested comparison.
ALTERNATE ALLEGED FATHER SAMPLE: NOT RECEIVED.
Name field blank.
Thomas Avery had never been tested.
The paternity mystery remained open.
But the report was not the reason Margaret chained Sophie.
Not really.
She had already admitted the reason.
Control.
Fear.
A secret she had survived too long to surrender gracefully.
Then Claire got a call from Sophie's therapist.
Sophie wanted to know why Grandma Margaret was not allowed to come over.
Claire answered carefully.
“Because Grandma made an unsafe choice.”
Not:
Because she isn't Daddy's real mother.
Not:
Because she lied about DNA.
May you like
That belonged to adults.
For now.
