Chapter 1 - WHY ARE YOU AFRAID?

Claire heard Sophie before she saw her.
Not screaming.
That might have been easier.
It was the small, exhausted sobbing of a seven-year-old who had already cried long enough to believe nobody was coming.
The birthday party was still going on inside Margaret’s house.
Music.
Children laughing.
Someone carrying a cake through the kitchen.
Bright balloons pressed against the glass patio doors.
Claire came around the side of the house—
and stopped.
Sophie sat on the patio against a wooden porch post.
A heavy outdoor chain had been looped around the post and around her, pinning her close enough that she could not stand.
Her cheeks were wet.
Her pink birthday dress was dirty at the hem.
“Mommy…”
Claire ran.
“Oh my God.”
She dropped beside her.
Sophie immediately reached for her.
“I want to go home.”
“I know. I know.”
Claire grabbed the chain.
Heavy steel links.
An old snap hook had been clipped back through them.
“Who did this?”
Sophie started crying harder.
Claire pulled at the hook.
It had been twisted under tension.
She could not release it quickly.
The patio door slid open.
Margaret stepped outside.
Perfect cream dress.
Pearl earrings.
Wineglass still in one hand.
Completely calm.
Claire stood.
“Who did this to my child?”
Margaret looked at Sophie.
Cold irritation crossed her face.
“That child doesn’t belong in this family.”
Claire stared.
Behind the glass, several guests began noticing.
“What did you say?”
“You heard me.”
Claire stepped toward her.
Margaret did not move.
Then the patio door slammed open again.
Daniel came outside.
He looked from Claire—
to Margaret—
then finally Sophie.
Claire pointed at the chain.
“Take the chain off Sophie!”
Daniel's face changed.
“Mom?”
Margaret immediately said:
“She went through my private study.”
Sophie cried:
“I was looking for the bathroom.”
“She stole something.”
“I didn't!”
Claire turned on Daniel.
“Take it off her.”
Daniel stepped toward his mother instead.
“What's going on?”
Claire stared at him.
“Your daughter is chained to a post.”
“She wasn't hurt.”
Margaret said.
Claire almost could not believe the sentence.
“She is seven.”
Margaret's mouth tightened.
“She needs to learn that other people's things are not hers.”
Claire moved toward her.
Daniel grabbed Claire's arm.
“Stop.”
She tore her arm once.
“Let go.”
“Claire, apologize and calm down.”
She looked at him as if she had never seen him before.
“Apologize?”
“To my mother.”
Sophie reached toward him.
“Daddy.”
Daniel heard her.
He looked.
And then looked away.
Something in Claire broke.
“Take your hand off me.”
She tried pulling free again.
Daniel slapped her.
Hard.
Claire's face turned with the impact.
The patio went silent.
Even the music inside suddenly felt far away.
Daniel looked stunned by what he had just done.
Claire slowly turned back.
She did not touch her cheek.
She looked at Sophie.
Then Margaret.
Margaret pointed toward the girl.
“She isn't even Daniel's child.”
Claire became completely still.
Daniel whispered:
“Mom.”
Margaret continued.
“You've been humiliating this family for seven years.”
Claire looked at Daniel.
Not Margaret.
Daniel did not defend the accusation.
That hurt differently.
Then Claire reached for her tan handbag.
Margaret's confidence changed.
Claire opened it.
Pulled out a sealed white laboratory envelope.
Daniel stared.
“What is that?”
Claire held it up.
“DNA results.”
Margaret lost all color.
Instantly.
Not anger.
Not smugness.
Fear.
Real fear.
Claire saw it.
So did Daniel.
Margaret lunged.
She reached for the envelope.
Claire jerked it away.
“Don't.”
Margaret came again.
Claire stepped backward and held the sealed report against her chest.
“Why?”
Margaret stopped.
May you like
Claire stared at her.
“Why are you afraid?”
