Chapter 6 - WHO PAID FOR THE PEARLS?

I remained in the car while David spoke to Rodrigo.

The property representative explained that no guest or occupant was being forcibly removed that night. However, my office, private suite, company records, and financial devices were restricted from interference. Security would remain until temporary occupancy arrangements were reviewed.

Rodrigo shouted that it was his family home.

David handed him a copy of the deed.

Marlowe Residential Holdings had purchased the property eighteen months before the marriage.

Rodrigo was not an owner.

Neither was Evelyn.

The birthday guests began gathering in the foyer again.

This time, they were watching Rodrigo.

Evelyn came down the staircase, still touching the pearls as though they might protect her.

“What is this nonsense?”

David asked whether she recognized the monthly account funding her expenses.

“My husband’s trust.”

“The trust ceased making distributions three years ago.”

Her hand stopped at her throat.

“That is impossible.”

“Elena established a voluntary support account. The payments came from her.”

Evelyn turned toward Rodrigo.

He looked away.

The same relatives who had watched me being slapped now watched the family story collapse piece by piece.

The mansion had not come from Sanders money.

The monthly allowance had not come from Evelyn’s husband.

The rescue of Rodrigo’s company had not come from an old family investor.

Uncle Thomas sat down on the staircase.

One of Rodrigo’s cousins whispered, “You knew?”

Rodrigo snapped at them to leave.

David remained calm.

Then he handed Rodrigo the notice concerning his company loan.

The assault itself did not automatically transfer ownership of Sanders Development to me. But the loan agreement contained morality, fraud, and interference provisions. His attempt to use fabricated medical claims to seize my voting rights triggered an investigation and temporarily restricted extraordinary company spending.

Payroll would continue.

Employees would not be punished.

Rodrigo’s personal access to discretionary funds would not.

Evelyn finally looked toward the driveway.

I lowered the car window.

“What have you done?” she demanded.

May you like

I looked at the necklace.

“Ask your son who paid for your pearls.”
