Chapter 4 - THE NIGHT THEY THOUGHT I WAS WEAK
The miscarriage changed the balance of our marriage.
Before it, Rodrigo complained that I worked too much but praised my ambition in public. Afterward, he began describing my grief as instability.
If I cried, I needed treatment.
If I remained composed, I was cold.
If I questioned a business decision, I was using control to compensate for losing the baby.
Evelyn repeated the same language.
She recommended a private wellness facility in Arizona. She gave Rodrigo the name of a psychiatrist who had once treated a family friend. She began asking whether I had updated my medical directive.
I thought she was being intrusive.
I did not realize she and Rodrigo were creating a record.
The month before her birthday, my chief financial officer alerted me that someone had requested copies of Mercer Infrastructure’s succession documents.
The request came from a lawyer representing Rodrigo.
He claimed he was preparing a “temporary spousal continuity plan” in case my emotional condition prevented me from managing the company.
I confronted Rodrigo.
He said the request was standard estate planning.
I called my own attorney, David Chen.
David discovered more.
Rodrigo had prepared a petition asserting I was suffering from severe post-pregnancy psychiatric impairment. The draft asked for temporary authority over marital expenses, residential decisions, and several corporate voting rights he did not legally possess.
Attached were statements from Evelyn describing me as paranoid, erratic, and financially vindictive.
One paragraph said I had threatened to make the Sanders family homeless.
They were not planning only to insult me at the birthday dinner.
They expected me to react.
If I shouted, broke something, or struck back after Rodrigo provoked me, eighteen relatives would describe an unstable woman losing control.
The security cameras were supposed to support their story.
