Chapter 9 - THE BUILDING AFTER DANIEL

Daniel’s removal from management did not happen in one dramatic morning.

His suspension began immediately because he posed a risk to records and finances. His formal termination followed after the audit confirmed forged documents, undisclosed conflicts and misuse of trust funds.

The refinancing application was withdrawn.

Existing employees continued receiving salaries.

Necessary repairs continued under independent oversight.

The fake vendor contracts were canceled where legally possible.

Several contractors entered settlement negotiations rather than defend invoices for work never completed.

Daniel and I divorced.

He argued that years of managing Carter House entitled him to an ownership share. The prenuptial agreement, trust documents and employment records showed otherwise.

He received his lawful marital property.

He did not receive Carter House.

Margaret remained in her apartment during the required notice period. I did not cut off her medication or basic housing overnight. The trust paid essential expenses while her attorney arranged a transition.

The driver, club dues, luxury travel and unlimited family-account access ended immediately.

Margaret moved into a smaller condominium purchased with her own remaining assets.

She called that cruelty.

I called it living inside her actual means.

Lauren repaid part of the consulting income after the audit showed she had performed little documented work.

The building’s tenants received credits for improper fees. A resident advisory board was created. Major vendor contracts now required independent review and public summaries for tenants.

Mr. Walsh remained building manager.

He later apologized for not raising concerns sooner.

“I thought Daniel had your approval,” he said.

“For some things, he did.”

“I should have checked when the pattern changed.”

“Yes.”

He nodded.

He did not ask me to protect him from the discomfort of that answer.
