Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN WHO KEPT FILMING

Lauren contacted me through Natalie two weeks later.

She claimed she had filmed the attack because she was afraid of her mother.

She said she never expected Margaret to throw the planter.

That might have been believable if the video had stopped.

It did not.

Lauren continued recording while I fell, while Margaret dragged me and while Daniel spoke through the phone.

She zoomed in.

She laughed.

She asked Margaret to do it again.

“I grew up with her,” Lauren said during a recorded legal interview. “You don’t understand what she’s like.”

I understood more than she expected.

Margaret controlled her children through money, praise and humiliation. Daniel became the son who maintained her lifestyle. Lauren became the daughter who performed loyalty.

Both were afraid of losing approval.

But fear does not force a person to enjoy someone else’s pain.

Lauren had choices.

She could have left the room.

Called for help.

Stopped filming.

Refused to lie.

She chose none of them until the accounts were frozen and the recording endangered her.

Eventually, she agreed to cooperate with the financial investigation. She provided messages showing Margaret and Daniel discussing the forged control document.

Her cooperation reduced some consequences.

It did not transform her into my rescuer.

The phone in her hand became important evidence.

That did not make the person holding it brave.
