Chapter 1 - The Choice

Julian’s eyes locked onto mine, and for a fraction of a second, I saw a flicker of sheer, unadulterated panic pass over his handsome face. He recognized me. He knew the dress I was wearing—or rather, the designer silk underneath the green, sticky mess—because he had seen me pack it into my suitcase that morning before I left our suburban estate.
Chloe leaned into his side, her voice purring with calculated innocence. "Julian, she wouldn't even use the service elevator. She was so rude to me."
Julian stood completely frozen. He looked at my face, then at the green sludge dripping onto the polished marble of the executive floor, and finally at Chloe’s wrist, where the white limited-edition watch caught the light.
He had a choice. A single, defining moment to step forward, demand an explanation, or offer even a shred of human decency to his wife of ten years.
Instead, his jaw tightened. His eyes grew cold, defensive, and hardened with a terrifying, desperate arrogance. He calculated the social cost of admitting his secretary had just assaulted the incoming CEO—who was also his wife—in front of his entire executive board.
"You're making a scene, Evelyn," Julian said, his voice dropping into a flat, condescending tone that cut far deeper than the icy matcha latte on my chest. "You come into my corporate headquarters unannounced, looking like a mess, and you harass my personal staff?"
A whisper rippled through the gathered employees. Chloe’s smile widened into a predatory grin.
"Julian..." I said, my voice eerily calm. "Is that your final response?"

"Go home, Evelyn," Julian sneered, stepping closer to Chloe and placing a protective hand on the small of her back. "You don't belong here. Chloe, handle this intern and have security escort her out of the building. I have a company to run."
He turned his back on me and walked back toward his corner office, leaving me standing in a pool of melting ice.
